Overhaul of benefits system

The fundamental restructuring of the benefits system that the government will proceed with in 2026, with the creation of the National Registry of Benefits and Subsidies as its main objective, is expected to bring more control, fairer distribution, and probably fewer beneficiaries with the welfare policy followed.

In practice, this is a shift in government policy from direct benefits to indirect subsidies through taxation, with liquidity injections through extraordinary payments where required.

This logic prevailed and will be applied at least until the creation of the National Registry of Benefits and Subsidies, which should operate, according to the plan, on a pilot basis from June this year. According to the plan, the registry will be integrated into Gov.gr, supervised by the Independent Authority for Public Revenue and interconnected in real time with Taxisnet.

The goal of the ministries of National Economy and Finance and Social Cohesion and Family is to create a single digital profile per tax registration number (AFM), where all the benefits received by each citizen will be recorded: OPEKA, DYPA benefits, child benefit, housing, heating, unemployment, disability, nursery vouchers, etc.
