He split with Sophie Grégoire Trudeau in 2023, after a lengthy marriage that had seen the former couple welcome their children: Xavier, 18, Ella-Grace, 16, and Hadrien, 11.

“Nobody knows better than I do what the pressures of party leadership can do to a young family. It tore mine apart,” he said, recalling his father and mother separating in 1977 and adding “I want to spend more time with my family.”
Feb. 28, 2014: Hadrien’s birth

He also wrote about how GrĂ©goire Trudeau influenced his style of politics and kept him grounded: “Sometimes it’s easy for people who have made politics their livelihood to get caught up in the heat of battle and forget about their personal values. Sophie never does, and no matter how intense things get, she makes sure I don’t either.”
May 24, 2016: Work-life balance
Trudeau announced he’d take a day off during the G7 Summit in Japan to celebrate his upcoming 11th wedding anniversary with his wife using “personal funds.”
“This is the kind of work-life balance that I’ve often talked about as being essential in order to be able to be in service of the country with all one’s very best and that’s certainly something I’m going to continue to make sure we do.”
June 11, 2016: Travelling with kids
During another interview with Wells, Trudeau opened up about what it’s like to travel with his three children. At the time, Xavier was eight, Ella-Grace was seven and Hadrien was two.
“Reasonably well. Reasonably well,” Trudeau said about how his children travel. “Certainly, in terms of adjusting to jet lag, I think I’ve had a lifetime of experience that leaves me better off than they are. In an interview with Victoria-based writer Tessa Lloyd for her book Forty Fathers: Men Talk about Parenting, Trudeau opened up about his father’s impact on his parenting style, how he aims to show love to his three children and his connection to GrĂ©goire Trudeau.
Trudeau opened up about his perception of fatherhood, noting he initially believed the most important thing was having kids. As he got older, he realized that being a dad was more about becoming a good person.
“To me, being a good dad means shaping the world around my kids in whatever way I can. I owe it to them to try to make this place that they inhabit better, safer and more just,” he said in an excerpt published by Today’s Parent.
He also opened up about how, as a prime minister, he had to miss out on certain moments of his children’s lives. However, he noted he was trying to be better about work-life balance, and that he was doing his best to be present with his kids whenever possible: “In this job, being fully present for my children is paramount. It’s a work in progress, but I’m mindful of it every single day.”
Later in the excerpt from the book, Trudeau also shared some sweet words about GrĂ©goire Trudeau. He explained that he also wanted their kids to see them in a “happy, successful relationship.”
“Sophie is my love, my equal and my life partner,” Trudeau said. “When I met her, I knew pretty quickly I had found the right woman to be the mother of my children. She’s been by my side throughout this incredible journey, and there’s no doubt in my mind that I couldn’t have done it without her patience, her guidance and her grace.”
Aug. 2, 2023: Separation announcement
An official statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office said Trudeau and GrĂ©goire have “signed a legal separation agreement” and the pair “have worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps with regards to their decision to separate have been taken, and will continue to do so moving forward.”
“They remain a close family, and Sophie and the prime minister are focused on raising their kids in a safe, loving and collaborative environment,” the statement added. “Both parents will be a constant presence in their children’s lives and Canadians can expect to often see the family together. The family will be together on vacation, beginning next week.”
Trudeau shared a statement on social media about their separation, noting they still had “deep love” for one another and that people respect their family’s privacy. Reports added that while Trudeau and the kids would remain at Rideau Cottage in Ottawa, GrĂ©goire Trudeau would move to a new residence nearby.

The people, the places, even the moments that once felt — I don’t know — infinite, right? Time asks us to not cling to them. And we do. I do. Because to hold on feels safer than to let go. But love was never about possession. It was always about presence.”
