The Spanish Super Cup final is almost upon us as FC Barcelona and Real Madrid make their final preparations for Sunday’s final in the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The blaugranes are chasing a 16th victory in the competition and a boost in morale for what remains of the season in La Liga.
Ahead of the final, Eric Garcia appeared in front of the media on Saturday, following on from an earlier press conference involving coach Hansi Flick. “We are going into the final with a lot of desire. Starting the new year with a trophy will be great, as we did last year. It can give us confidence for the remainder of the season,” said the Catalan blaugrana.
“The trophy will give us a bit of breathing space and confidence, and that’s important. We are a young squad and it would be a boost,” added Eric.
Eric Garcia does not believe the defeat in the league in the Santiago Bernabéu against Real Madrid earlier in the campaign will have a negative effect on the team. “The league game was tough for us, it hurt, and so it extra motivation for tomorrow. It’s a chance to turn things around but the most important thing is to win the trophy. If we can improve in areas we did not do well in at the Bernabéu then I’m sure we will get a good result,” he continued.
The versatile defender highlighted the team’s development over recent weeks. “Even though we had a lot of players out at the Bernabéu it is not an excuse. We have improved as a team and the other [the semi-final against Athletic], we put in one of the performances of the season. We are in good from even though we were not great against Espanyol, but Wednesday’s game give us confidence,” reasoned Eric.
Finally, the Catalan reflected on his versatility this season under coach Hansi Flick. “Adapting to different positions is something that the coach values a lot and I am really happy. I don’t know where I will play, or if I will play, but I’ll be happy wherever. I think I am in good form but I can still improve and that is important,” concluded Eric.
