Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration, and Expatriates Affairs Badr Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s firm stance against any unilateral and illegal recognition of “Somaliland.”

He stressed that such recognition violates international law, UN charters, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and African Union principles on respecting state sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Speaking at the extraordinary session of the OIC’s Council of Foreign Ministers on Saturday 10/1/2026, Abdelatty emphasized that such actions threaten Somalia’s unity and stability and undermine the international order.

He underscored that the current challenges in the Horn of Africa necessitate international support for Somalia’s institutional rebuilding and territorial control.

Abdelatty also pointed out that Israel’s actions occurred at a critical time for Somalia, requiring global backing for political solutions, counterterrorism efforts, and Somali-Somali dialogue to ensure peace, security, and prosperity for the Somali people.

He commended the strong stances of several OIC member states, the Arab League, and the African Union, all rejecting the Israeli recognition and affirming Somalia’s national unity and sovereignty. He reiterated Egypt’s support for OIC collective action to reinforce Somalia’s territorial integrity.

Meanwhile, the minister reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to backing the Palestinian cause, including its support for a draft resolution that maintains a just stance on defending the Palestinian people against Israeli occupation. He also rejected any attempts to use the recent Israeli recognition of “Somaliland” to further illegal plans such as the forced displacement of Palestinians or deepening divisions in Gaza.

Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people’s sovereignty and rights, calling for the immediate implementation of the second phase of the plan to ensure a lasting ceasefire, facilitate humanitarian aid, and initiate recovery and reconstruction efforts, with the ultimate goal of establishing an independent Palestinian state based on international law.
