Battling freezing temperatures and slippery paths, bin crews still made sure to collect more than 150,000 bins over the festive period.

Walking over nine miles a day on average, waste operatives put the hard yards in to keep the borough clean one day at a time.

In a year, they will walk the equivalent of walking around planet Earth over three times! Coupled with these harsh conditions during Winter, crews will experience several adversities to make sure your bin is emptied throughout the year.

This December alone, crews collected 3,378 tonnes of general waste, 355 tonnes of paper and cardboard and 551 tonnes of plastic, glass and cans. In total, that’s the same as 4,200 cars!

Gary Edwards, Head of Waste & Operations, praised the waste operatives for their unwavering efforts over the busy period.

“We know crews work tirelessly throughout the year to keep the borough clean and tidy, but they work especially hard over the festive period with alterations to collection dates and harsh conditions to cope with too.

I would like to say a personal thank you to all the team for making this year a success and we look forward to another positive year.”

Councillor Hudson, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Net Zero, added: “These numbers show just how much waste we produce as a borough and outlines how hard teams work to ensure the job is done correctly.

“They have faced a number of adverse weather conditions recently too and have risen to the challenge; they should all be proud of what they’ve managed to achieve over the last couple of weeks.”
