The Haaretz headline in early 1979 was dramatic: “Iran expels all Israelis from its territory – announces it ended relations.” Another front-page article read: “Iran’s revolutionary government announced today a complete severance of diplomatic relations with Israel and issued orders expelling Israelis with diplomatic status still in Iran. … The government said that ‘this step was taken in accordance with the policy of ending any and all ties with Israel.'”
