Much to my colleague’s amusement, I am notorious for my lack of knowledge when it comes to all things gaming. If you excuse the dance mat phase on my younger brother’s PlayStation in my teenage years, I can hand on heart say, I’ve never so much as picked up a controller, let alone attempted to play any kind of game.
That is, until I was browsing the popular Garmin apps on the ConnectIQ store, and saw the $2 Flappy Bird game. Intrigued, I pressed download, and within minutes, I was hooked on this utterly pointless but fun game. After a few days, I’m still no better and still have an embarrassingly low high score, but if you’re the kind of person who enjoys playing games on your phone, this is a cheap and cheerful download worth making.
If you haven’t played, it’s pretty simple — you press up and down to get the bird to fly between green poles. If you hit a pole, you’re out. I used the game on my Garmin Venu 4, which has an AMOLED touchscreen, but if you’re on a different model, you can use the buttons on your Garmin watch itself.

To download the app, you’ll need to have the ConnectIQ app installed on your phone — this is where you can add apps to your Garmin watch, or download a Garmin watch face. If you are looking for a new face, here are the five Garmin watch faces resident Garmin expert, Nick Harris-Fry, always downloads.
You have to pay for this app, so you’ll need to sync a credit card to Garmin Pay if you haven’t already. Once you have, simply click buy, and you can download the app to your watch if it’s compatible — most of the newer watches are, including the newer Forerunners, Fenix, and Epix lines.
Once you’ve downloaded the app once, you’ll be able to add it to a second Garmin device in the future if you do choose to upgrade your watch.
For $2, you can’t really go wrong here; just don’t blame me when you miss your stop on the subway.
