Ethiopian runners Tadu Abate and Yeshi Chekole won the men’s and women’s elite races, respectively, at the Mumbai Marathon 2026 on Sunday.
Tadu Abate claimed his fourth international full marathon title after clocking 2:09:55 to win the men’s race, while Yeshi Chekole finished with a time of 2:25:13 to bag the women’s elite crown.
Runners from Ethiopia claimed the top six spots in the women’s elite race. Kidsan Alema Ghebremedin (2:27:35) finished second while Gojjam Tsegaye Enyew (2:28:27) came in third.
Ethiopia’s Medina Armino, who finished third in last year’s Mumbai Marathon, came fifth with 2:33:02.
In the men’s elite race, Kenya’s Leonard Langat finished in second spot behind Tadu Abate with a time of 2:10:10. Eritrea’s Merhawi Kesete, who finished second last year, was third after crossing the finish line in 2:10:22. Uganda’s Victor Kiplangat, the 2023 world champion, came fifth with a time of 2:11:02.
Indian runners at Mumbai Marathon 2026
Among Indian elite runners, Sanjivani Jadhav denied Nirmaben Thakor a hat-trick of Mumbai Marathon titles on her course debut. She took the top spot among Indian elite women with a time of 2:48:58.
Nirmaben Thakor and Sonam finished second and third with timings of 2:49:07 and 2:49:21, respectively.
In the men’s elite, Kartik Karkera was the only Indian athlete to clock below 2:20:00, winning the race in 2:19:55. Defending champion Anish Thapa came second with a time of 2:20:08 while Pradeep Chaudhary was third in 2:20:49.
Sunday’s race was the 21st edition of the Mumbai Marathon, which is a World Athletics Gold Label Road Race event.
