Anya Taylor-Joy on the red carpet at TIFFImage via MediaPunch
Anya Taylor-Joy proved herself a worthy franchise-leader just a few years ago with Furiosa, but last year she starred in a much more horror-focused sci-fi thriller that’s becoming an all-time streaming success. Taylor-Joy stars opposite Miles Teller (Top Gun: Maverick) in The Gorge, the 2025 monster film following two operatives who are appointed to guard opposite sides of a classified gorge. The Gorge has been streaming on Apple TV since its premiere last year on Valentine’s Day, but it’s still one of the top three most popular movies for the streamer, outlasting much newer arrivals from later in 2025.
What makes The Gorge’s continued streaming success even more impressive is that the film wasn’t any kind of critical or audience juggernaut. It earned mediocre scores of 62% from critics and 74% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, which isn’t anywhere near the peaks for either Taylor-Joy or Teller. The film was also released straight to streaming on Apple TV, so it did not return any box office earnings. Many fans felt this was a bad call at the time, and it’s hard to dispute that the film would be a beautiful watch on the big screen. Sigourney Weaver (Avatar: Fire and Ash) also stars in The Gorge.
Zach Dean wrote the script for The Gorge, and Scott Derrickson directed the film. Dean is best known for his work writing the 2023 action blockbuster, Fast X, and he also penned the script for Chris Pratt’s massive sci-fi film, The Tomorrow War. Derrickson is famous for directing the first Doctor Strange movie starring Benedict Cumberbatch, and he more recently helmed both of Ethan Hawke’s Black Phone horror films.
What Else Is Streaming on Apple TV Right Now?
There are only three movies on Apple TV higher on the streaming charts than The Gorge right now. The first is F1, Brad Pitt’s racing blockbuster that grossed over $600 million at the global box office this summer. Following behind F1 is The Family Plan 2, the Mark Wahlberg-led action sequel that even recruited Game of Thrones veteran Kit Harington to its cast. Guy Ritchie’s Fountain of Youth, which is perfect for Indiana Jones or Uncharted fans, is the third-most popular movie on Apple TV right now. The most popular show on Apple at the time of writing is Tehran, the espionage thriller starring Shaun Toub.
