Jimmy Kimmel gave viewers a “Doomsday update” during his show on Tuesday, January 27, as he also addressed how the White House was handling the ongoing tensions in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The ABC late-night television host, 58, briefly touched on the recent Doomsday Clock update scientists have announced, which was that clock has now been set to 85 seconds to midnight. The Doomsday Clock is metaphor used to illustrate how close humanity is to a global catastrophe.

Despite the seriousness of the situation, Jimmy playfully reported on the stress-inducing move from The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists—the organization in charge of setting and monitoring the Doomsday Clock.

“The Doomsday Clock, a symbolic clock designed to warn the public about man-made threats to human existence, is now at 85 seconds to midnight. Meaning that snow or otherwise, there is no longer any point in sending children to school,” the comedian host quipped during a mock breaking news segment titled “Doomsday Update.”

Jimmy further teased, “The future is black and we’re all going to die.”

Jimmy’s witticism continued in his opening monologue outside of the fake breaking news segment when talked about the President Donald Trump administration appearing to have no game-plan for easing the conflict Minnesota.

A battle between the anti-immigration agency ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) ensured right after Minnesota resident, Renee Good, 37, was shot and killed by an ICE agent on January 7, 2026. Since then, there have been hectic ICE protests in Minneapolis.

Tensions within Minneapolis further escalated on Saturday, January 24, after protester Alex Pretti was shot multiple times and killed by ICE agents. Jimmy mocked the White House for seemingly struggling on how to rein-in Minneapolis.

“The White House is scrambling to clean up the mess they made in Minneapolis,” he expressed. In the fall out of the fatal shooting of the ICU nurse, Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, came quickly to the defense of the involved border agent, and wasted no time labeling Alex a “domestic terrorist” who “attacked officers” and was “brandishing” a gun.

However, Trump did not back Kristi’s assessment, marking a shift in tone compared to his response to the Renee Good shooting earlier this month.

“I don’t like any shooting. I don’t like it,” Trump told the Wall Street Journal. This comes amid Kristi reportedly being relegated to a less prestigious role following the second Minneapolis shooting.

Following Trump seemingly throwing Kristi under the bus, she sought a two-hour meeting with him in the Oval Office on the night of Monday, January 26.

According to the Mirror U.S., sources said she demanded the meeting after she felt as though she had been “sidelined.”
