Following our previous look at an opening for an Architect at Paul Halajian Architects, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for a Dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Virginia.
The role, based in Charlottesville, calls for a “principled, visionary, and strategically minded leader” to serve as the School of Architecture dean. Among the responsibilities for the role will be to provide strategic vision and operational leadership for all aspects of the school’s activities, including academic programs, faculty and staff affairs, fiscal management, institutional advancement, and external engagement. Among the requirements for the role are an advanced professional or doctoral degree with credentials suitable for appointment as a full professor.

The open role for the University of Virginia’s Architecture dean offers an insight into the vision for the school in the coming years. At what the school describes as “a pivotal moment for design education,” the school expects the new dean to build upon for strategic areas: Legacy, Impact, Engagement, and Innovation. The school also seeks to prioritize multi-disciplinary thinking and a “shared commitment to rigorous investigation and critical interpretation.”
The search comes shortly after the University of Virginia was featured among our list of 2026 Summer architecture programs for kids and high school students, with the school running the Design Discovery Youth Summer Program in June. In March of last year, meanwhile, the school awarded the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal in Architecture to Hood Design Studio founder Walter Hood.
Last year, a student from the University of Virginia was among those selected to present at Exhibit Columbus Cycle 5. Also in 2025, several faculty members from the school were honored with Faculty Design Awards at the ACSA Architectural Education Awards.
