There have been rumors that Hilary is estranged from her sister Haylie, exacerbated when the latter “liked” Ashley Tisdale’s article about a “toxic mom group” that was rumored to include Hilary. Her father made headlines back in the ’00s for spending time in prison and having an affair while married to Hilary’s mom.

The 38-year-old’s upcoming album marks her return to music after over a decade. Some of the songs reportedly deal with tense relationships with family members — with “We Don’t Talk” seemingly referencing her sister, and “The Optimist” including the lyrics, “I wish I could sleep on planes, and that my father would really love me.”

Hilary was asked in an interview with Glamour about why she chose to write about her family. “That’s my family. Those are the people that affect you the most, take up the most space naturally as a human who’s born into something,” she replied. “Just because you’re born into a family doesn’t mean that it always stays together.”

“You can only control your side and your street,” she continued. “I’ve had a very complicated life, and my parents had a very complicated thing. I know it’s not rare, and I think it goes back to the theme of, Why share now? I guess I just felt ready.”

She echoed her thoughts in another interview with Rolling Stone. “There’s times where I talk to my dad and times where I don’t talk to my dad,” she said. “I do have a pretty sunny disposition, but a lot of shit has gone down, and that’s life.”

As for “We Don’t Talk,” she said that it came from the period of publicity following her divorce. “I made a choice to put that song on my record,” she said. “That’s definitely the most lonely part of my life, and I struggled with, ‘Am I going to share this?’”

“People have known my life since I was a child, and so they know all the characters in it and they know what I’m talking about. For me, it was important to be open about that theme. It genuinely came from the heart,” she added.
