Amid Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest on February 19 on suspicion of misconduct in public office—and being in custody on his 66th birthday—the whereabouts of his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, remain unknown.
Up until earlier this month, the former Duke and Duchess of York—who married in 1986, divorced in 1996, but moved back in together in 2008—lived together in Andrew’s 30-room mansion, Royal Lodge, on the Windsor estate. After being exiled from the property, Andrew moved to the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, specifically Wood Farm—but Sarah has been MIA.

According to Hello!, Sarah is reportedly “lying low” in the United Arab Emirates, which is where the outlet reported she is believed to be at the time of Andrew’s arrest on Thursday. Before heading to the U.A.E., Sarah reportedly “spent a few days with friends in the French Alps,” the publication reported.
Andrew’s association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has landed him in police custody, specifically because of allegations that he leaked classified information in his role as a U.K. trade envoy to Epstein, a role Andrew held from 2001 to 2011. Sarah, too, has been in hot water over her emails with the late financier after the latest batch of Epstein files were released on January 30.

In addition to the U.A.E. and the French Alps, Sarah also reportedly spent time with her younger daughter, Princess Eugenie, when she was in Doha, Qatar attending Art Basel in her role as director of art gallery Hauser & Wirth. Hello! reported that Sarah is “attempting to fly under the radar and is on the hunt for a new PR team to help her return to society.” That said, according to the outlet, following Andrew’s arrest, Sarah’s future “is more uncertain than ever.”
“She has stood by him all these years but is now ready to spread her wings,” a source told Hello! last month. “She won’t be moving in with him to the new house on the Sandringham estate. She won’t be moving to [Princess] Beatrice’s Cotswolds home, though. Eugenie’s home in Portugal is a contender while she finds somewhere.”

A source speaking to People echoed this, telling the publication that she planned to “forge an independent life” away from her ex-husband. “She is assessing a number of options currently, and no final decision has been made,” the insider said, adding that “Contrary to reports, she has never asked for a property or any provision for herself.”
As for Andrew and Sarah’s daughters Beatrice and Eugenie, “They are pretty torn because they believed [their father],” veteran royal biographer Robert Jobson told People. “Just like the late Queen [Elizabeth] and [King] Charles, Andrew told them all the same story—that he had done nothing wrong. My understanding is they feel pretty duped by the whole thing.”

“I do think they believed their father, and now it has all backfired,” he continued, adding of Sarah that the sisters “have always been very defensive of their mother. There’s a sense that they would put an arm around their mom, but dad will be left to get on with it.”
“I have sympathy for them,” Jobson said. “It’s not their fault who their parents were associated with.”
