AIP Publishing (AIPP) has announced a new three-year AIP Fusion agreement with the Max Planck Society, strengthening a long-standing partnership.

The agreement, negotiated by the Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL) on behalf of the Society, provides researchers affiliated with Max Planck Institutes with read access to AIP Publishing’s full portfolio of journals and the ability to publish open access in all AIP Publishing and publishing partner titles, including gold open access journals, without individual article processing charges. Through AIP Fusion, publishing and reading are integrated into a single, institution-level agreement designed to reduce administrative complexity while supporting equitable participation in open research.

AIP Fusion is AIP Publishing’s institution-centered open access model, developed in close consultation with libraries and consortia worldwide. By shifting away from per-article transactions, the model enables institutions to support open publishing at scale while maintaining predictable costs and preserving editorial independence.

“We value the collaborative approach AIP Publishing has taken in developing this model with institutions, and we see it as another strategic investment in open access that supports our researchers while advancing a more open scholarly communication landscape,” said Ádám Dér, Head of the Scientific Information Provision at the MPDL. “We are pleased to be an early adopter and to support AIP Fusion as it moves into broader implementation.”

“MPDL has been a valued partner to AIP Publishing for many years, and their input during the development of AIP Fusion helped ensure the model reflects real library priorities,” said Kevin Steiner, Global Head of Sales, AIP Publishing. “This agreement demonstrates how publishers and libraries can work together to expand access to high-quality research while supporting a sustainable and scalable path to open science.”
