Texas Health Resources is planning to build a hospital in McKinney, with the medical campus slated to open in 2028.

The health system this week is publicly detailing its plans for the first time. However, the general outline of the plan has been public for months, as the health system has already gone through the city’s zoning approval process.

Josh Floren, Texas Health’s Hospital Channel chief operating officer, said Collin County’s growth was the major deciding factor for the new hospital.

“The growth has gotten to a point where it can fully support Texas Health putting a hospital in that community,” Floren said.

The new Collin County hospital will be seven stories and, when it opens, will have 60 beds. The facility will have the capacity to expand up to 119 beds, Floren said, based on local population growth and whether other new hospitals pop up, too.

There are other hospitals in McKinney already, including Methodist McKinney Hospital, Medical City McKinney and a Baylor Scott & White hospital. The Texas Health location, though, will be on the north side of town, closer to Melissa.

The hospital, according to a health system news release, will be located on a 51-acre plot of land near U.S. 75 and Laud Howell Parkway.

Having a hospital in north McKinney, Floren said, will mean local residents don’t have to travel as far for care.

“That’s one of our major goals, is to take care of these patients in their community,” he said.

Floren said the McKinney hospital will alleviate strain on other Texas Health hospitals, especially as the suburbs north of Dallas continue explosive population growth.

The new hospital will have surgical set-ups, a labor and delivery unit, a NICU and an emergency department, among other services.

The hospital is currently in the design phase and Floren said it’s not yet clear when the groundbreaking will occur.

The system didn’t give an estimated cost for the new medical campus. As a point of comparison, though, Texas Health spokesperson Deanna Boyd Spangler said the new, under-construction medical campus in Forney has a price tag of $320 million.

She also said the new McKinney hospital, once open, will bring a few hundred jobs.
