Over 140 years after work on Gaudí’s Sagrada Família began, the final piece of the Barcelona landmark’s central tower has been put in place.

At 566 feet, the cathedral is the tallest church in the world, and the tallest building in Barcelona.

The central Tower of Jesus Christ is the tallest of 18 designed by Gaudí. A ceremony to mark the completion of the tower is scheduled to take place with Pope Leo XIV in attendance on June 10th, the centenary of Gaudí’s death. Construction of the church is scheduled to be completed by the end of the decade with the completion of the south-facing facade.

Late last year, we covered news that a large cross was being installed atop the central tower. Based on a double-twist geometry concept, the cross transitions from a square base to an octagonal upper section, with white glazed ceramic and glass on its exterior.
