Across eleven live-action movies, Batman has faced off against many of his most iconic villains – the Joker, the Riddler, Bane, Two-Face and more. However, the only villain who objectively beat him has only appeared once, across all DC media.
Batman Returns’ Poodle Lady Is the Only Villain Who Actually Beat Batman

The villain in question is Batman Returns’ Poodle Lady, played by Anna Katarina. Tim Burton’s 1992 movie pits Batman against Danny DeVito’s Penguin, Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman and Christopher Walken’s Max Shreck, however they’re actually not the only villains the Dark Knight goes up against in the film.
She’s the only movie villain to truly beat Batman and get away scot-free…
In the movie, Penguin is supported by the Red Triangle Gang – a criminal syndicate made up of former circus freaks and performers, who carry out false-flag attacks to help him become mayor of Gotham. And while Batman lays out the gang’s strongmen, acrobats and psycho clowns, he can’t stand up to the Poodle Lady’s skills.
Why the Poodle Lady Is Batman’s Most Successful Villain

Batman Returns reveals that the Poodle Lady (her canon stage name) is a circus performer whose trained dog can carry out a variety of tricks. With the rest of the Red Triangle gang, it’s implied she helped the Penguin kidnap and kill various Gotham children before the events of the movie.
During the movie, she helps blow up Gotham by having her poodle plant explosives, kidnaps the Ice Princess beauty queen (who Penguin then murders), takes part in Penguin’s plan to kill all the city’s firstborn sons, and even directly squares off against the Dark Knight.

In an early scene, Batman takes on four members of the Red Triangle gang, programming his batarang to strike all four in one throw. While Batman takes down the first three, the Poodle Lady isn’t injured because her dog jumps up and grabs Batman’s batarang out of the air. In response, the Poodle Lady gives the Dark Knight a withering glance and saunters off.
Later, as Batman infiltrates the Penguin’s hideout, the Poodle Lady abandons her leader and recedes into the shadows, escaping both the Caped Crusader and the GCPD. In all of Batman movie history, she’s the only villain who never lost a fight to Batman and got away scot-free – a surprising feat, given the crimes it’s implied she was part of.
Batman Fans Deserve More Poodle Lady

The Poodle Lady isn’t just technically Batman’s most successful movie villain – she’s the hidden gem of the whole movie. The Poodle Lady stars in some of the funniest moments of an already funny film, and her deadpan delivery is fantastic. For almost the entire movie, the Poodle Lady doesn’t speak, all to pull off a scene near the end where what seems like an automated, monotonous voice turns out to be her speaking into a microphone.
That’s what makes it tragic that the Poodle Lady doesn’t appear anywhere but Batman Returns. Fans who want more of the character can find her in the background of the movie’s official comic adaptation and the Amiga tie-in game, but she’s never graced a separate story.

That’s especially tragic because DC actually brought the Red Triangle gang into comic continuity in 2022’s Robin #15, but the Poodle Lady was nowhere to be seen.

Superhero comics love referencing stories and characters from all forms of past media, so there must be room to bring back the deadpan delight from Batman Returns – especially because DC has recently continued Tim Burton’s Batman universe in comics like Batman ’89.
The Poodle Lady’s Dog Is an Actual Movie Star

Precious from Silence of the Lambs
A bizarre addendum to the story of the Poodle Lady is that her dog is a bonafide movie star. The dog’s real-life name is Darla, and she starred in not just Batman Returns, but The Silence of the Lambs, Coming to America, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure and The ‘Burbs (alongside Tom Hanks.)
So while the Poodle Lady may be Batman’s most obscure movie villain, her dog is actually a secret celebrity who starred in multiple household-name movies!
