LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – Lehigh extended its winning streak to five with a 19-11 win against Rider on the road.
“Today was another great team win,” exclaimed head coach Steph Lazo. “On both ends of the field, we were able to play as a unit and have game changing plays. We faced adversity in the first quarter but were able to bounce back and finish the game strong. I am so proud of our effort and strength today!”
Shannon Nolan wasted no time getting Lehigh on the board, scoring the first goal just 17 seconds into the game. After another goal from Chloe DelNegro, the Broncs and Mountain Hawks went back and forth in the first quarter, trading goals that left the first period that ended in a 7-6 Rider lead.
Grace Martel notched two goals in the second to power Lehigh to a halftime lead. Molly Snow and Gracie Shoup added a goal apiece while Jane Hughes kept Rider scoreless to bring the Lehigh lead to 10-7 heading into the locker room.
A four goal third period kept Lehigh in the lead. Shoup, DelNegro, and Ava Schulties all grabbed their second scores of the game, and Nina DeNicola grabbed a goal as well. Two saves by Hughes and a blocked shot limited Rider to just one score that came from Marybeth Smith, allowing the Mountain Hawks to go into the final period up six.
Two more goals from Snow and another from Martel brought their total up to four apiece, while Schulties and Shoup both found the back of the net one more time to finish the day with hat tricks.
Kacie Wines was a big contributor as the points leader for the Mountain Hawks, dishing seven assists and earning a goal. Wines also led the team in caused turnovers, forcing two. Shoup also had three assists to pair with her three scores.
Both keepers saw playing time for Lehigh. Michaela Jennings started the game and played the first 9:36, then Hughes came in as relief and tallied ten saves.
Brynn Freeman and Martel both grabbed five ground balls as the top Mountain Hawks. Morgan Lesiewicz and Snow locked down the center circle, with Lesiewicz controlling a team-high seven draws and Snow winning five.
Rider had two players with hat tricks of their own. Smith and Marissa Ross both scored three as the top-scoring Broncs.
Lehigh (5-2, 0-1 PL) stays on the road for a game against Mount St. Mary’s (Md.) on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
