In a recent BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge session, pop star Harry Styles and his band performed with Eurorack modular gear from Arturia and Behringer.

Eurorack synthesizers have gained massive popularity in recent years. While initially they were primarily a thing for modular synthesis enthusiasts, they are now used in many studios by many artists.

Its popularity seems to have grown so much that it’s even reaching pop stars who you wouldn’t expect to use Eurorack. In a recent BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge session pop star Harry Styles plays with a small Eurorack system.

One could cynically say that Eurorack has gone mega-mainstream, especially when you think of it alongside Harry Styles’ popular music.

But you can also take a more technical view and say that a Eurorack modular synth is just as much an instrument as a guitar, bass, or any other Synthesizer. I’m in favor of the latter, but back to the main topic.

Harry Styles played the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge session using a small Eurorack system. The case is an Arturia RackBrute with modules from Intellijel and others. Furthermore, the Soma Lyra-8 FX can be identified….

It appears he’s playing the modular synth alongside the Sequential Prophet-6 desktop. Next to it is also a classic: an original Roland RE-201 Space Echo. Plus, there’s a Roland SP-404MKII sampler.

The way he uses the modular system is not clearly visible. However, it sounds like he’s using it as a bassline-like synth with the Soma FX module.

Harry Styles isn’t the only one in the band who’s succumbed to the allure of Eurorack. Another member uses a complete Behringer System-55, an authentic clone of the Moog Modular.

Even though Mr. Styles’ music doesn’t appeal to me, the whole live performance sounds excellent.

This is a good example of how the popularity of Eurorack modular has increased in recent years. Let’s see, maybe Arturia, Behringer, Intellijel… have a new influencer now, but I think he’ll be a bit too expensive for them.
