As we did with the trio, we gave Rani “howdy” access to three sides of the calf’s enclosure in the Elephant Barn. This creates multiple opportunities for close proximity under protected conditions—that is, with a safety barrier between them. Rani seemed surprised to see Linh Mai up close for the first time but was inquisitive, curious and calm throughout their encounter.
Rani has a very strong relationship with Swarna, so it is good for her to see Swarna interact so casually with Linh Mai. Throughout their lives, Swarna has been supportive of Rani, who tends to become easily excitable. Importantly, Swarna’s presence provides some security and is helping Rani realize Linh Mai is nothing to be worried about or scared of. With Swarna’s influence, we continue to see Rani show gradual interest in Linh Mai, with some reservations.
