Business for Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride!, starring Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale, is going from bad to worse in its second weekend at the box office.
Written and directed by Gyllenhaal, The Bride! opened in theaters nationwide on Feb. 13. The film is an unorthodox spinoff tale based on author Mary Shelley’s original 1818 Gothic classic, where Frankenstein’s monster, aka “Frank” (Bale), travels to 1930s Chicago to ask Dr. Euphronious (Annette Bening) to create a mate for him.
Hamnet Oscar nominee Buckley stars as the title character, a murder victim who Euphronious jolts back to life. Soon after, Frank and The Bride become outlaws and go on the run from authorities in what feels like a mashup of The Bride of Frankenstein and Bonnie & Clyde with elements of Young Frankenstein and Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” music video thrown in for good measure.
The Bride! bombed in its opening weekend at the worldwide box office, earning $13.6 million worldwide, with just over $7 million of the tally coming from North American ticket sales. It was a disastrous beginning for the Warner Bros. release, considering, per Variety, that the film had a $90 million production budget and a worldwide marketing spend of $65 million.
The misfortunes for Gyllenhaal’s monster mash are continuing this weekend, as Deadline projects The Bride! will earn an estimated $2.15 million domestically in its second Friday to Sunday frame, which is a 70% drop from the film’s opening weekend.
The trade publication noted that The Bride! only made $650,000 on Friday, which marks a 78% dive in business from the film’s opening day on Feb. 13. The film, which opened in 3,304 theaters, is still showing in the same amount of venues.

Deadline reported that The Bride! was made for $80 million, which counters Variety’s report of a $90 million production spend. Either way, Warner Bros. is looking at a huge loss once the film wraps up its theatrical run.

Warner Bros. Pictures‘Hoppers’ Heading Toward Another No. 1 Finish
Disney-Pixar’s Hoppers is looking to hold onto the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office in its second weekend with a projected $30 million, Deadline reported.
Should the estimate hold, it would mark only a 34% drop in business from the film’s opening weekend, March 6 to March 8, when it earned $45.3 million from 4,000 North American theaters.
Two new films opened in theaters on Friday. Universal Pictures’ romantic drama Reminders of Him, which opened in 3,402 theaters, is projected by Deadline to earn $19 million-plus for a No. 2 finish.
Undertone, a new horror thriller from A24, is projected by the industry trade to earn just under 10 million. The film opened in 2,570 North American venues.
Note: This box office report will be updated throughout the weekend. The final number for this weekend’s box office will be released on Monday.
