Sam Raimi’s horror movie Crawl may not be getting the kind of sequel fans have so eagerly been anticipating. Raimi was a producer for the 2019 horror film, and it had a warm welcome, breaking $91 million at the box office.
Crawl is an intense horror movie following swimmer Haley Keller (Kaya Scodelario) as she searches for her father during a Category 5 hurricane in Florida. Trapped in her home as it floods, she’s hunted by massive alligators swept in by the storm.
There’s not much information on Crawl 2 yet, but it will be directed by Alexandre Aja again, who’s known for Horns and The Hills Have Eyes. The sequel will have two new writers – Andrew Deutschman and Jason Pagan. Evil Dead creator Raimi is confirmed to be producing again.
Despite news of a sequel to Crawl, in an interview with The Playlist, Kaya Scodelario has dismissed claims she will be involved:
“It wouldn’t be with me. I saw the article and was like, ‘All right, f*ck it, let’s do this again. It was the most fun, challenging thing I’ve ever done. But no, not a real one, I’m afraid.”
What Kaya Scodelario’s Absence Means For Crawl 2
Scoledario’s comments aren’t a massive surprise, as, even at the time of the original movie’s release, Aja was already suggesting a sequel would follow new characters. Despite Scodelario’s character surviving, it appears as though her story ended with the first installment. It’s not known who will be the leading lady or man for the sequel, but there will be a whole new cast and a new location.
Crawl 2 will be located in New York City, as animals will escape from Central Park Zoo during a storm, unleashing unknown dangers to the survivors of the storm who are trapped in a high-rise building.
Even without Scodelario leading the cast, Aja has been working on the Crawl sequel for a while and even confirmed back in 2024 that he “never really stopped” following the original movie’s release.
Our Take On Crawl 2
Kaya Scodelario Screaming in Crawl
Horror sequels have been a hit or miss over the years. Crawl’s surprisingly positive reception begs the question: how can it be beat? The original premise that built tension due to the audience experiencing fear, claustrophobia, and an intense feeling of dread worked well for the 2019 film.
It will be hard to have that same feeling with the sequel, especially considering the original characters won’t be involved. However, it’s not all doom and gloom, and it will be interesting to see how the team for Crawl 2 will bring that same level of tension to the streets of New York City as animals run rampant.
