The radio station of the Church in Malta, RTK103, is celebrating its 34th birthday on Saturday, having been inaugurated  on 14 March 1992 by Archbishop of Malta Joseph Mercieca and Bishop of Gozo Nikol Cauchi.

The church had expressed its wish to own a radio station in the 1980s, though it was only in 1990 that it was offered a radio frequency.

In the ensuing consultation process launched by Archbishop Mercieca, two potential models were considered: a religious radio station which would focus on explicitly religious content, and an all-format station with a Christian ethos. The second option won out.

The new station would be named RTK, with the slogan chosen being “radju ta’ kulħadd” (everyone’s radio).

A radical rebranding of the station took place in 2019, and the station was renamed 103 Malta’s Heart. In 2023, however, the station incorporated its original moniker as it assumed its present name, RTK103.

The station continues to be a generalist station which features informative and discussion programmes, news and current affairs as well as music and entertainment, all while continuing to be inspired by Christian values.

As with Newsbook Malta, RTK103 is managed by the Beacon Media Group, the media company owned by the Catholic Church in Malta, formed through the merger between the Media Centre and RTK Ltd.
