ABIDJAN (Cote d’Ivoire) – The Regional Office of Africa is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Mr Yacouba Yira, former administrative director of the confederation, which occurred on Sunday 15 March 2026.
Mr Yira devoted many years to serving the Regional Office of Africa playing an active role in developing African basketball and bringing administrative discipline, integrity and commitment to supporting national federations and continental competitions.
He was known for his professionalism and kindness, and he will be greatly missed by our teams and partners.
At the national level, he was recognised for his long-standing dedication to sport in Côte d’Ivoire and was awarded the title of Knight of the Ivorian Order of Sporting Merit after more than three decades of service.
The Regional Office of Africa extends its sincere condolences to his family, loved ones and all those who had the privilege of working with him. We share in their grief during this difficult time and pay tribute to his dedication to African sport.
