Namibia is reporting a resurgence of malaria in the first weeks of 2026. In the first five weeks, a cumulative total of 11,327 confirmed malaria cases were reported, of which 73% were locally acquired and 27% imported. A total of 21 deaths have been reported during the same period.
The burden is highly concentrated, with five districts – Katima Mulilo, Nkurenkuru, Outapi, Andara and Nyangana – accounting for nearly 69% of all confirmed cases nationally.
To date, a total of 21 districts had exceeded their epidemic thresholds.
Transmission appears largely driven by favorable postrainy season conditions that increase Anopheles mosquito breeding, with the majority of infections locally acquired, while imported cases highlight continued cross-border vulnerability.
