Selena Gomez, Zendaya and Dame Helen Mirren have all rocked some version of the bob — 2026’s hottest haircut.
As a cranky beauty editor who’s seen literally hundreds of hair trends come and rapidly go, I was sure 2025’s big bob moment (think Leslie Bibb in the White Lotus) had passed and, in 2026, we’d all be onto the next hot coiff. However, as it turns out, this classic style has real of-the-moment staying power. Here’s why: While haircut fads are always shifting — and each generation claims its own faves — the bob is proving to be somewhat universal: crossing ages, life stages and even hair types, with everyone from 80-year-old Helen Mirren to 29-year-old Zendaya rocking the look.
“I truly believe everyone can wear a bob — it’s just about tailoring it to hair type, density and lifestyle,” says celebrity stylist Beau Dieda. “The mistake people make is thinking a bob is one specific cut. It’s not. A bob can be blunt, textured, layered, short, long, soft or structured. When you customize it properly, it works on every hair type from pin-straight to tightly coiled.”
How to get the best bob for your hair type
“The biggest thing to consider with a bob is how the hair naturally behaves. The best bob always comes down to how the weight, layers and perimeter are built,” says Dieda. “If the cut ignores the texture, it’s going to be a daily styling battle.” He adds: “Styling makes a huge difference with a bob because it really shows off the cut.”
I asked Dieda how to find the right bob cut for your particular hair type — and how to style it once you do.

Dieda says straight hair is actually ideal for a bob because it shows off the cut’s shape. “I love a blunt or slightly graduated bob on straight hair because the lines look really clean and polished,” he says. “If someone has very fine straight hair, keeping the perimeter blunt helps create the illusion of density. For straight hair, density is the biggest factor. Fine, straight hair benefits from a blunt perimeter because it instantly makes the hair look thicker. One thing I avoid is over-texturizing or thinning shears on fine straight hair — that can make the ends look wispy and weak.”
For straight or thin (and thinning) hair, Dieda says another concern can be too much layering in a bob: “Most of the time I keep layers minimal and rely on the blunt edge to create structure and fullness,” he says.

“For straight hair, I love using a flat brush or round brush with tension while blow-drying to keep the shape sleek, Dieda says. “A lightweight volumizing spray at the roots helps prevent it from falling flat. Using a powerful dryer like the SRI DryQ helps create that smooth, polished base. Sometimes I’ll add a slight bend with a flat iron (I like the StyleQ) just to give it a little movement.”

Straight, fine or thin hair will hold any style better with a boost from texturing products like this popular spray. It’s lightweight and not at all sticky but still manages to add significant grip to finer hair along with covetable shine. Pro tip: Hold the nozzle at least 8 inches from your scalp while spraying to keep the mist fine and not too heavy.

This precise and lightweight pro-grade tool is Dieda’s pick for styling a straight bob. “I often smooth the hair with a high-powered dryer like this, which uses ionic technology and intelligent heat control to help create a sleek finish while minimizing frizz and heat damage.”

“With wavy hair, the key is embracing the natural movement,” Dieda says. “I usually soften the shape a bit and add subtle internal layers so the waves don’t stack up or get bulky at the bottom. A slightly longer bob — like a lob — tends to work beautifully because it allows the waves to form naturally.” In terms of a specific cut? “For wavy hair, internal layers are really important,” Dieda explains. “They help break up the weight so the waves can move freely. You want the shape to feel light but still have enough structure to avoid looking shapeless.”

“For wavy hair, I encourage people to work with their natural texture,” Dieda says. “A sea salt spray or texture spray scrunched into damp hair works great. Diffusing lightly with a dryer helps enhance the waves while keeping the bob shape intact.”

The best bobs for curly hair (types 3a-3c)
Contrary to what many people think, according to Dieda, curly hair can look incredible in a bob if the cut respects the curl pattern. “I usually cut it dry or at least visualize how the curls live naturally. The goal is to create shape without removing too much weight so the curls stay defined and balanced,” he explains. “Curly hair needs weight in the right places — if you remove too much weight, the curls can expand unpredictably. [The key is] to be careful about where layers sit so the shape doesn’t become too wide or uneven. The layers should support the curl pattern and keep the shape balanced. The goal is a bob that expands in a controlled way rather than puffing out.”

Hydration and curl definition are key for curly hair and Dieda recommends applying a curl cream or leave-in conditioner while the hair is damp, then diffusing or air drying. “A gentle diffusing technique with a good blow dryer can help set the curl pattern while maintaining volume and shape,” he says, “and always avoid brushing curls out once they’re dry — that’s when you lose the shape.”
Marc Anthony
For frizz-free, high-definition curls you can’t do much better than this nourishing formula from Marc Anthony — especially for the price. It’s packed with shea butter, vitamin E and avocado oil to drench dry strands and control frizz, without leaving your hair crunchy or weighed down.
Wavytalk
As the name suggests, this hair tool is designed specifically to enhance curls. It uses negative ion tech to eradicate frizz and, according to testers, offers better curl definition than what you’d get with an air-dry.

The best bobs for coily hair (types 4a-4c)
“Coily hair can absolutely rock a bob!” Dieda says. “The focus here is shaping the hair rather than forcing it into a traditional blunt line. I love building a rounded or softly-structured bob that works with the natural volume and density of the coils.” He explains that balance and hydration are key to getting this particular cut right: “The cut should enhance the natural shape of the coils, which have natural lift and volume that need to be respected — shaping is everything. I look for a cut that follows the natural growth pattern of the coils. The weight should sit in a way that allows the hair to hold a beautiful rounded or sculpted shape.”

Dieda says that adding moisture is key for creating the best bob look for coily hair. “Layering hydration is the trick,” he explains. “A leave-in conditioner followed by a curl cream or styling butter helps define the coils and keep the shape polished. Stretching techniques like twist-outs or light diffusing with the DryQ can help control shrinkage while still maintaining the bob silhouette.”
Matrix
This silicone-free, manuka-honey-infused cream envelops coils and kinks with a layer of seriously protective moisture — it actually guards against heat damage up to 450 degrees. The rich formula can help smooth strands, define curls and seal in hydration without leaving hair crunchy or stiff.
