Is your hospital on the list? 14 N.J. facilities ranked safest in the nation.

Fourteen New Jersey hospitals rank among the top 10% in the nation for patient safety, according to Healthgrades’ list of America’s Safest Hospitals for 2026.

The list recognizes 438 hospitals from 40 states as recipients of the Patient Safety Excellence Award.

To be eligible for the award, recipients must be in the top 80% of hospitals for clinical quality, have zero instances of a foreign object left behind during surgery and have data on seven core patient safety indicators, such as postoperative sepsis or accidental puncture rates.

Recipients have a lower rate of preventable complications and adverse events than other hospitals.

According to Healthgrades, patients at award-winning facilities were, on average:

52.4% less likely to experience an in-hospital fall resulting in fracture.

57.5% less likely to experience a collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest.

67.8% less likely to experience a catheter-related bloodstream infection acquired in the hospital.

71.9% less likely to experience pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital.

“The data behind this year’s Patient Safety Excellence Award highlights how measurable improvements in safety can prevent thousands of complications,” said Dr. Alana Biggers, medical advisor at Healthgrades, in a press release. “Hospitals that prioritize evidence-based safety practices not only achieve better clinical outcomes, but also cultivate a culture where patients come first. These insights give individuals and families the information they need to make confident and better informed healthcare decisions.”
