The nightclub element has struck home for Sue, who says it feels “very close” due to Alex’s passion for DJing. Before his condition worsened, she had feared his earache might lead to long-term issues, which would affect his ability to enjoy music. “When it was confirmed that he had meningitis, the first thing that went through my head was his hearing, because that’s quite a common problem,” she says. “And I thought, ‘How would he cope if he lost his hearing?’ But I didn’t know at that point that it was going to be worse than that.”
