Forget time machines and time-warping black holes. At The Horizon of Khufu experience, the magic of cutting-edge virtual reality technology makes it possible to step back in time, witness ancient ceremonies, and explore forbidden realms where the public can no longer venture.
Now open at Manchester’s Transmission House, this immersive adventure is a collaboration with Egyptologists from Harvard University who have ensured an authentic and educational exploration of Ancient Egypt. You simply slip on a headset and will find yourself plunged into a world of kings, gods and golden treasures.

What can you expect at The Horizon of Khufu experience?
No need for hiking boots, binoculars or suncream, this virtual reality experience will transport you to the golden sands of Egypt without leaving Manchester. All you need to do is pop on the VR gear, and within minutes you’ll be watching the fiery sun rise over the Giza Necropolis, gazing out from the cloud-piercing peak of the largest Egyptian pyramid and floating along the Nile under the light of a giant silver moon to watch the funeral of King Khufu.
Don’t worry, you won’t be floating around aimlessly, but instead take the form of a glowing avatar, which allows you to spot your friends and, handily, avoid bumping into strangers in the sprawling free-roam space. You’ll also be following a chirpy virtual guide, Mona, who shares stories of the pyramids and shines a light on the mythology and beliefs of the time. Make sure to watch out for the mysterious cat who accompanies you on your journey – there’s more to the feline than meets the eye.

It’s not every day that you can follow in the footsteps of people who lived over 4,500 years ago. The Horizon of Khufu experience is ideal for history buffs, curious kids and those of you who just fancy a unique adventure. Over the course of your hour-long digital exploration, secrets will be revealed, and mysteries unravelled, leaving you with a newfound knowledge of Ancient Egypt and the Pharaoh Khufu.
