Busang Collen Kebinatshipi has become the first sprinter to clock under 10 seconds in the 100m this season.

And not only did the reigning 400m world champion manage that at the Botswana National Athletics Championship on Friday 4 April, but he achieved the world-leading feat twice in a day, according to World Athletics.

Kebinatshipi took home the title after clocking 9.89 seconds to win the men’s 100m final at the championships, having ran that same time in the heats.

He becomes just the second Motswana to post sub-10 after Letsile Tebogo, the Paris 2024 champion over 200m.

Tebogo, who posted 9.86 at Paris 2024 over 100m for a national record, had also been set to race but withdrew last minute due to an injury.

Kebinatshipi’s 100m personal best is an improvement on his 10.53 at the BAA Track And Field Series 4 in Botswana last month.

The 22-year-old, who won silver in the 4x400m relay at Paris 2024, won two world titles at last year’s world championships.

He won the individual 400m when beating Jereem Richards, and added a second world title when winning the 4x400m relay.
