Following our previous visit to Marmol Radziner, we are keeping our Meet Your Next Employer series in Los Angeles this week to explore the work of dSPACE Studio Architecture.
Based between Los Angeles and Chicago, the firm specializes in contemporary single-family homes, interiors, and landscape design. “Our work is rooted in multisensory, site-responsive architecture that supports how people live, rest, and connect with each other and with place,” the firm says about its approach. Recently, the firm’s work has been honored at the AIA Chicago Design Excellence Awards and the Brick in Architecture Awards.

A rural residence set beside a lake, Silver Lake sees primary living spaces embedded into the hillside beneath a green roof. The home is accessed through native prairie plantings, leading to a lofted lounge with framed views of the water. Internally, varied ceiling heights, geometric forms, and layered lighting create spatial progression. A continuous sloping roof connects the upper and lower levels. Material selections, including cedar, corten steel, and copper, are intended to weather over time, reflecting environmental exposure and patterns of use.

Zinc House is a single-family residence designed for a couple and their three children in a dense urban neighborhood. The L-shaped plan balances privacy and natural light, with a shielded front facade and a rear elevation opening onto a landscaped yard. Stepped volumes clad in standing seam zinc reduce perceived mass and frame controlled views. The interior includes open-plan living areas, a double-height great room, and dedicated spaces for work, recreation, and family use. Sustainable strategies include a green roof, passive solar design, and drought-tolerant landscaping integrated with existing vegetation.

A single-family residence situated on a dune overlooking Lake Michigan, Dunelands is designed to integrate with its natural surroundings while addressing environmental constraints. The structure employs a steel superstructure to support a thin roof with extended overhangs for passive solar performance and resilience against wind and snow loads. Clad in sand-colored stucco, the home is intended to blend with the surrounding vegetation over time.

Skylight House sees the renovation and vertical expansion of a 1979 modernist brick residence. The project introduces a third-floor addition containing a primary suite and reorganizes the interior around a three-story atrium capped by a pyramidal skylight, maximizing natural light throughout. The footprint steps back from the southern boundary to improve solar access. Open-plan living spaces are complemented by integrated storage and concealed functions within custom cabinetry. A sculptural stair connects all levels within the atrium.
