San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama reacts during a game as his return timeline comes into focus before the playoffs.
The San Antonio Spurs could be getting their franchise centerpiece back at a critical moment, as Victor Wembanyama is progressing toward a return from a rib injury, according to a report from ESPN insider Shams Charania.
Speaking on NBA Countdown, Charania said there is growing confidence within the organization that Wembanyama will be able to return as soon as Friday against the Dallas Mavericks, positioning him to meet the league’s 65-game threshold for postseason award eligibility.
“There’s confidence that Victor Wembanyama will be able to play at least one of these final two games as soon as Friday,” Charania said. “Right now, he is day to day… he needs to play at least 20 minutes in one more game, and the Spurs are very confident that he’ll be able to do so.”
Wembanyama Closing In on Award Eligibility
The timing of Wembanyama’s return carries significant implications beyond just the regular season. The second-year star needs to log at least 20 minutes in one more game to qualify for major postseason honors, including All-NBA consideration and Defensive Player of the Year.
Wembanyama has built a compelling case across the board this season, emerging as one of the league’s most dominant two-way players. His combination of scoring, rebounding and elite rim protection has placed him firmly in the awards conversation, with many around the league viewing him as a frontrunner for Defensive Player of the Year.
While he also generated late-season momentum in the MVP race, recent missed time — including a rib contusion that has sidelined him for consecutive games — has slowed that push.
Rib Injury Impacts Breathing, Spurs Exercise Caution
GettyVictor Wembanyama reacts after sustaining a rib injury during a game as the San Antonio Spurs await further evaluation on his status.
Charania noted that medical testing revealed a significant bruise to Wembanyama’s rib, an injury that can affect breathing and overall conditioning.
That factor has contributed to the Spurs’ cautious approach, with the organization prioritizing long-term health as the postseason approaches. San Antonio has consistently taken a measured stance with Wembanyama throughout the season, especially when dealing with multiple injuries.
“The Spurs are viewing the regular season as a ramp-up period for the playoffs,” Charania said. “It’s all about the long term, the health of the player.”
That philosophy aligns with the franchise’s historical approach, emphasizing sustainability over short-term gains as it prepares for a potential deep playoff run.
Spurs Balancing Health and Playoff Positioning
Despite managing Wembanyama’s workload, the Spurs remain in the hunt in the Western Conference. They are still mathematically alive for the top seed, though the Oklahoma City Thunder control their own destiny and need just one more win to clinch the league’s best record.
San Antonio’s broader focus, however, extends beyond regular-season positioning. The team is preparing for its first playoff appearance since 2019 and aiming to reestablish itself as a contender in the conference.
Led by Wembanyama, the Spurs are attempting to build toward a championship run reminiscent of their past success during the Tim Duncan era, when the franchise captured five NBA titles, most recently in 2014.
Wembanyama’s Minutes Trending Up
Before the injury, Wembanyama had already begun ramping up his workload, a sign the Spurs were preparing him for postseason intensity.
In a 136-134 overtime loss to the Denver Nuggets, Wembanyama logged a season-high workload, playing nearly 40 minutes and delivering a dominant stat line: 34 points, 18 rebounds, seven assists, five blocks and one steal.
The performance showcased his ability to handle extended minutes against elite competition, even as the Spurs have generally managed his playing time carefully throughout the season.
His average minutes have not reached over 30 minutes since December, raising questions about his stamina for the grueling games ahead.
What It Means for Spurs’ Playoff Push
Wembanyama’s potential return Friday would not only solidify his eligibility for postseason awards but also provide a crucial boost for a Spurs team gearing up for the playoffs.
With the regular season winding down, San Antonio appears focused on striking the right balance between ensuring its star’s health and building momentum heading into the postseason.
If Wembanyama is cleared to play, even in a limited role, it would mark an important step in that process and reinforce the expectation that he will be a central figure when the stakes rise in the weeks ahead.
