The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the talk of the town right now in terms of video game adaptations, but the next video game movie, Mortal Kombat 2, is almost here–and now a new trailer has arrived.

The trailer focuses on Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage and his mission to save the world, and it’s the kind of over-the-top action one would expect from the series based on pulling people’s spines out. There is a special moment midway through the trailer where Cage is drowning his sorrows at the bar. He goes to ask for one more drink. And the bartender? He’s played by none other than Ed Boon, the creator of the Mortal Kombat series. Check it out.

The new trailer also heralds the start of ticket sales for Mortal Kombat 2. The movie releases in theaters on May 8, so there isn’t much longer to go.

Simon McQuoid returns as director, following 2021’s Mortal Kombat. That film earned $84.5 million worldwide, but hopes are no doubt higher for the sequel given the first was released during the pandemic.

New Line originally had the movie set for release on October 24, 2025 before delaying it more than seven months to May 8, 2026. McQuoid said the delay was due to the film being “a victim of our own success.”

“Every time people have seen this movie, it’s gained momentum,” the director said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “We’ve created a massive summer blockbuster, so I think we should all be proud of the fact that Mortal Kombat 2 and the franchise itself is going to kick off [in 2026]. Yes, we have to wait, but it’s going to feel massive when it comes out.”

The cast also includes Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, and Tati Gabrielle as Jade. It’s not the only movie based on a popular fighting game coming this year, as the Street Fighter movie with a stacked cast arrives in October.

The popcorn bucket

Like many other big movies, Mortal Kombat 2 will have its own themed popcorn bucket, and it’s a clapper board to showcase Johnny Cage’s history in the movie business.

At New York Comic-Con in 2025, Warner Bros. announced that it had greenlit Mortal Kombat 3.

As for the Mortal Kombat game series, no new games have been announced, but the franchise is so popular that it’s naturally expected to continue. The series, and main developer NetherRealm, may have a new owner soon if Paramount’s deal to buy Warner Bros. goes through.
