Islander, Lucy Bagshaw, has announced that she has been given permission to run a community book pledge in support of the charity, Sophie’s Legacy.

She described Sophie’s Legacy as “a beautiful, beautiful charity” that continues Sophie’s bucket list by working to make a difference nationally.

Supporting families in hospital
The charity provides food, toiletries and other essentials to families in hospital. It also campaigns for wider changes to improve the experiences of children and parents.

Lucy said the charity has “personally helped me in the past as well as thousands of other families.”

What is a community book pledge?
Lucy explained that a community book pledge raises money to provide books. These books will support families and children, giving them something to escape into and enjoy together.

She added that businesses which choose to sponsor the pledge will receive a certificate to display, showing that they want to help make a change too.

Sophie’s story
Sophie was a young girl who died of cancer. Through her experiences in hospital, she wanted to see changes made for children and their families.

Her wishes included play therapists being available seven days a week, not just on weekdays, parents being fed as well as children, more child-friendly meals at suitable times, and increased funding for research into childhood cancer.

Local impact
Sophie’s Legacy already supports families on the Isle of Wight, including through snack boxes provided at St Mary’s Hospital and the Special Care Baby Unit.
