As more information about Avengers: Doomsday has been released, it has become increasingly clear that Marvel is rewriting the entire Multiverse Saga ahead of the anticipated movie. Marvel and Disney released a wealth of new information about Avengers: Doomsday at CinemaCon 2026. Some of the reveals included the first trailer for Doomsday, plot details, and quotes from the cast of Doomsday and its creators.

The new information about Avengers: Doomsday from CinemaCon 2026 reinforced an idea that has already been swirling around the upcoming film: that it’s rewriting the Multiverse Saga. The Multiverse Saga comprises phases 4, 5, and 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and includes Multiverse Saga movies like The Fantastic Four: First Steps and shows like Loki. It was originally intended to set the stage for Doomsday and Doctor Doom’s arrival, but that may not be the case anymore.

The MCU has already walked back some of the decisions it previously made in the wake of Avengers: Endgame that the Multiverse Saga attempted to reconcile. The entire scope of Doomsday also changed, as the original plan was for Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror to be the main villain of the next Avengers movie. That original plan was being set up by shows like Loki and movies like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, but the MCU pivoted to Doctor Doom after Majors’ real-world controversies.

The cast of Avengers: Doomsday also suggested that the Multiverse Saga wouldn’t be as important as originally thought. Both Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, for example, are returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom and Steve Rogers, respectively. Several actors from Fox’s X-Men films are also returning to the roles for Doomsday, such as Patrick Stewart and James Marsden. Now, there’s even more reason to believe that Doomsday is rewriting the Multiverse Saga.

Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, made some comments at CinemaCon 2026 that didn’t bode well for the Multiverse Saga. During his presentation, Feige said that “Doomsday picks up where Avengers: Endgame left off,” (via The Hollywood Reporter). Feige also revealed that Avengers: Endgame is being re-released with new footage ahead of Doomsday’s premiere (via Variety).

Feige didn’t elaborate on how exactly Avengers: Doomsday would “pick up where Endgame left off,” but the wording of that quote seems to imply that the MCU is distancing itself from some of the developments of the Multiverse Saga. If Doomsday really does pick up right at the end of Endgame, then everything from WandaVision to Spider-Man: Brand New Day — the entirety of the Multiverse Saga — won’t have happened yet.

The new scenes Feige promised for Endgame’s re-release also seem to indicate some level of backtracking. Why release new scenes for Endgame seven years after it premiered if not to set the stage for Doomsday in some way? This re-release seems to be working in tandem with the promise that Doomsday is a direct sequel to Endgame. If that is the case, the Multiverse Saga won’t be nearly as important as we thought it would be.

There are, of course, some indications that Doomsday won’t do away with the Multiverse Saga entirely. The characters from Thunderbolts* and Shang-Chi, for example, are set to appear in Doomsday, and the events of The Fantastic Four: First Steps already introduced Doctor Doom. Still, this comment that Doomsday directly follows from the end of Endgame implies that the majority of things that happened in the Multiverse Saga are at least going to be downplayed.

All of this, from Kevin Feige’s comments to the cast of the movie, seems to imply that Marvel is trying to return to form and turn Doomsday into a more direct “sequel” to Avengers: Endgame. The MCU is already undoing so many things Endgame itself and the Multiverse Saga set up. Chris Evans is back as Captain America, Robert Downey Jr. is back in a new role, and even the X-Men are back in the main Marvel fold.

After 6 Years, Marvel Studios Finally Admits That The Multiverse Saga Is A Failure

The MCU was at its peak when the Multiverse Saga started, but half a decade later, Kevin Feige and his team finally admit its failure to launch

Avengers: Doomsday may end up feeling more like the Infinity Saga than the Multiverse Saga by the time it premieres on December 18. Feige and Marvel seem to be trying to revert the MCU back to the way it was in 2019, with many of the original members of the Avengers and X-Men with very few of the changes from phases 4 and 5. There’s still quite a bit up in the air and unconfirmed, but for now, it seems like the Multiverse Saga is being ignored.

It remains to be seen if rewriting the Multiverse Saga will be a winning strategy for Marvel. The MCU has, admittedly, had some misfires since 2019, with Eternals and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier springing to mind. The Multiverse Saga has also been responsible for some truly amazing stories, however, like Loki and Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3. It would be a shame if Avengers: Doomsday chooses to throw the proverbial baby out with the bathwater in an attempt to rewrite the Multiverse Saga.
