Q: When will the Formula E GEN4 car make its racing debut?

The GEN4 era officially begins with the start of the 2026/27 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship season. This next-generation car represents the biggest technical leap in Formula E’s history.

Q: How much power does the Formula E GEN4 car have?

The GEN4 car is a massive step up in performance, delivering 450kW of power in standard race mode. However, when ATTACK MODE is engaged (or when the car is taking part in qualifying), the car reaches a staggering 600kW -approximately 804bhp. This is a 71% increase in peak power compared to the previous GEN3 Evo generation.

Q: What are the main differences between the GEN4 and previous generations?

Key technical enhancements for the new GEN4 race car include:

Design: The GEN4 features two distinct aerodynamic configurations: high downforce, optimised for qualifying, and low downforce designed specifically for race conditions, delivering unmatched performance on track.
Performance & Technology Highlights: GEN4 delivers a dramatic boost in performance and technology with 450kW peak race power, 600kW ATTACK MODE for powerful overtakes, enhanced 700kW regenerative braking, and race energy capacity up to 55kWh for bolder race strategies.
Sustainability Innovations: The construction of the GEN4 features 100% recyclable materials (with at least 20% recycled content), delivering unmatched performance, driving the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship’s leadership as the world’s most sustainable motorsport.

These new additions are specifically designed for faster and closer racing between drivers, giving fans even more on-track action and building on the world-leading specification of the GEN3 car.

Q: Does the GEN4 car have permanent all-wheel drive (AWD)?

Yes. Unlike the GEN3 Evo, which utilised only its front motor for traction during race starts and in ATTACK MODE, the GEN4 is the first Formula E car and single-seater racer with permanent, active all-wheel drive. This allows for unparalleled grip and torque vectoring through every corner.

Q: How fast is the acceleration on the GEN4 car?

The GEN4 car can achieve 0-100km/h in ~1.8 seconds, and hitting 200km/h in 4.4 seconds. In qualifying trim, the GEN4 is expected to be around 10 seconds faster per lap than the GEN3 car.

Q: What tyres will the GEN4 car use?

Bridgestone – marking the manufacturer’s return to an FIA World Championship for the first time in a decade-and-a-half, will supply tyres for the 2026/27 season.

For the first time, the series will move away from a single “all-weather” tyre. There will be two distinct specifications: a primary high-performance tyre for standard conditions and a dedicated extreme wet weather ‘monsoon’ tyre to ensure racing continues even in wet conditions.

Q: How sustainable is the GEN4 car?

GEN4 sets a new benchmark as the world’s most efficient and sustainable race car. It is the first race car to be 100% recyclable, incorporating 20% recycled materials in its construction. With near-total motor efficiency and the ability to regenerate up to 40% of the energy used during a race.

Its tyres are made from 65% natural and recycled materials, including 30% certified natural rubber, and the battery contains no rare earth minerals. At a broader level, Formula E remains the first global sport certified to the BSI Net Zero Pathway Standard and the first motorsport series in the world to achieve B Corp Certification.

Q: Which manufacturers are currently committed to Formula E’s GEN4 era?

Jaguar
Porsche
Nissan
Citroën
Mahindra
Lola
Opel

These manufacturers are not simply adapting existing expertise, they are deploying cutting-edge, in-house innovations to push performance to unprecedented levels. Through rigorous testing and advanced powertrain and energy management development, teams will fine-tune the GEN4 car ahead of the 2026/27 season.
