Marvel officially announces a Rocket Raccoon spinoff mini-series for Summer 2026. The Guardians of the Galaxy stand apart from Earth-bound teams like the Avengers through their distinct blend of cosmic scale and found-family grit. Most superhero organizations are known for their status as sanctioned protectors or elite task forces, while the Guardians are a group of marginalized outcasts, mercenaries, and former villains who are forced together by the sheer necessity of survival.
The Guardians of the Galaxy has featured powerhouses like Quasar, the protector of the universe, and Moondragon, Drax’s telepathic daughter. Other pivotal members include Phyla-Vell, a formidable warrior carrying the legacy of Captain Marvel, and the enigmatic Adam Warlock in his more seasoned, philosophical role. However, the Guardians of the Galaxy line-up is never truly complete without Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Groot, or Rocket Raccoon.
Although these five heroes are most famous for their heroics with their fellow Guardians, each of them has a long history of their own.
Rocket Raccoon Stars In His Own Mini-Series This Summer

This year, Marvel celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of Rocket Raccoon’s comic book debut. As part of Marvel Comics’ July solicits, Rocket Raccoon: Rocket Rewind promises to expand the space bandit’s story with a new adventure alongside Rocky Raccoon, a new character named after Rocket’s original inspiration, the Beatles’ 1968 song of the same name. As its name suggests, Rocket Rewind will also revisit the hero’s origins from a new perspective.
Variant covers for Rocket Raccoon: Rocket Rewind feature Rocket’s direct rival bounty hunter Blackjack O’Hare, who was canonically killed off recently in The Mortal Thor, as well as Fin Fang Foom, who’s traditionally associated with Iron Man and his rogues gallery. The solicit also promises “pulse-pounding action, cosmic calamity and enough firepower to make GALACTUS blink.” Guest appearances by characters from the cosmic corner of the Marvel Universe are to be expected.
Rocket Raccoon Is The Star Of A Unique Marvel Journey
Rocket Raccoon’s Story Is Unlike Any Other Marvel Hero’s

The MCU delivered a poignant adaptation of Rocket Raccoon’s origins through the lens of the High Evolutionary and the tragedy of Batch 89, but the source material paints a far more expansive and surreal picture of his life in the Keystone Quadrant. In the comics, Rocket was the Ranger of Halfworld, a planetary asylum where sentient animals were genetically engineered to act as wardens for a population of mentally ill humans. Halfworld’s complex societal structure was omitted, including the warring industrial empires run by rival animals.
The MCU has yet to introduce Wal Rus, Rocket’s stout engineer and tactical partner, as well as the villainous Lord Dyvyne and Judas Sparrow, who work on massive toy-making corporations that fueled Halfworld’s economy. In the comics, Lylla the Otter is the heiress to a massive toy empire and a capable adventurer who accompanies Rocket on numerous missions. The MCU has also yet to explore Rocket’s significant tenure as the leader of the Guardians, which doesn’t seem to be a priority for the franchise at the moment.
Perhaps the most significant missing element is the bizarre, high-concept nature of Rocket’s true original purpose. In the comics, the animals eventually discovered that their sentience was intended to be temporary and that they were meant to be replaced by robots so they could finally leave Halfworld. This journey included a bizarre space-war involving a Gideon’s Bible and a total societal liberation. Since then, Rocket has been a loyal Guardian and a famous cosmic hero who has teamed up with the likes of Spider-Man.
