The Avengers may be Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, but as powerful as they might be, they tend to overlook the full potential of their best superpowers and abilities. The Avengers rely on a precise synergy between vastly different worldviews and skill sets. Each member provides a unique tactical layer, from the street-level expertise of Hawkeye’s elite marksmanship to the cosmic wisdom that comes with Thor’s near-immortality.

Even with the presence of titans like Captain Marvel, Thor, and the Hulk, the Avengers maintain a balanced dynamic where every hero is vital. The Avengers’ mightiest powerhouses often provide the necessary force to push back world-ending threats, but they rarely possess the specialized tools required for every stage of a conflict. The sheer physical might of a single Avenger is rarely a universal solution, so Marvel’s most powerful heroes trust their more grounded teammates to handle the precision and strategy that raw strength can’t provide.

Yet, the Avengers ignore the full spectrum of possibilities that their most useful superpowers have to offer. Otherwise, all problems would be solved almost instantly by a small handful of heroes.

Jack Of Hearts’ Zero-Energy

The Avengers Don’t Seem Too Interested In Controlling And Making Good Use Of Jack Hart’s Powerful Energy

Jack Hart aka Jack of Hearts chokes Norrin Radd and threatens Thanos in Silver Surfer Rebirth
Jack Hart aka Jack of Hearts chokes Norrin Radd and threatens Thanos in Silver Surfer Rebirth

Jack Hart’s body constantly generates volatile Zero Energy, a force so unstable it requires a specialized containment suit to prevent a nuclear-scale detonation. This is a curse more than a blessing, as Jack of Hearts struggles to control his energy and sometimes ends up killing innocent people, like Scott Lang. His immense source of energy provides him with flight and concussive blasts that rival the power of a small star. On several missions, Jack has acted as a living battery.

Jack of Hearts’ Zero Energy ability makes him almost exclusively a tragic character. But if the Avengers found a way to keep his powers under control as effectively as they find solutions to the most difficult challenges in the Marvel Universe, Jack could power entire civilizations or neutralize other energy-based threats by absorbing them into his own internal furnace. Sadly, Jack of Hearts often sits on the sidelines, otherwise he would kill most enemies or create an environmental hazard for his fellow heroes.

Storm’s Weather Control

Ororo Munroe’s Weather Control Should Be Much More Than A Fancy Element-Manipulating Attack Style

Ororo Munroe’s mutant gift allows her to manipulate atmospheric pressure, temperature, and moisture. As an Avenger and an X-Man, Storm summons gale-force winds and lightning strikes to scatter enemy armies. Her power works through a psychic connection to the planet’s biosphere, meaning she feels the world as an extension of her own nervous system. But while Storm often takes the role of both the Avengers and the X-Men’s heavy hitter, the true depth of her meteorological influence is rarely explored.

Normally, the true potency of weather control stays hidden behind the visual spectacle of lightning bolts. Ororo Munroe’s recent godlike power-ups aside, a baseline Storm could theoretically flash-freeze the air in an opponent’s lungs or alter the pressure inside a villain’s skull to induce instant unconsciousness. Likewise, Storm’s ability to end droughts or eliminate natural catastrophes altogether also carries massive geopolitical weight that the comics avoid in order to keep the world recognizable.

Spider-Woman & Starfox’s Mind Manipulation

Jessica Drew and Eros’ Most Effective Powers Are Inherently Unethical

Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman sits on a web surrounded by spiders
Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman sits on a web surrounded by spiders

Jessica Drew and Eros of Titan both exert influence over the brains of those around them, albeit through different biological methods. Jessica secretes potent pheromones that induce fear or attraction, while Eros stimulates the pleasure centers of the brain via a psionic field. In Avengers skirmishes, Spider-Woman and Starfox’s talents are often a last resort to pacify a crowd or distract a powerful foe. The implications are terrifying, as they bypass physical armor and target the very core of a person’s agency without a single punch thrown.

An example of mind control gone wrong is Purple Man, whose word-based influence powers are also severely nerfed in order to avoid making him invincible.

Mind manipulation through biology is an understandably neglected tool in the Avengers’ kit. These powers are inherently dubious, morally speaking. If used with cold efficiency, Spider-Woman and Starfox could end many battles by convincing the enemy to simply stand down or fall asleep. Still, all best-case scenarios border on the unethical, which makes it difficult for the heroes to maintain their benevolent image while negating their enemies’ free will. Realistically, an infiltrator with these gifts would be the most dangerous person in any room, regardless of their physical strength.

7

Wonder Man’s Ionic Energy

Simon Williams Should Be The First Avenger To Enter Any Battle, But He’s Rarely In The Line-Up

Simon Williams aka Wonder Man activates his fully ionic form
Simon Williams aka Wonder Man activates his fully ionic form

Similarly to Jack of Hearts, Simon Williams is composed entirely of sentient ionic energy, which grants him immortality and physical stats that rival the Sentry. Wonder Man doesn’t need food, water, or oxygen, and his form can technically reconstitute itself if dispersed. During his time with the team, Wonder Man primarily acts as a brawler, using his fists to solve problems that require a more nuanced approach. But Simon Williams’ ionic nature means he’s effectively a ghost in a solid shell, capable of feat-based feats that go far beyond simple weightlifting.

Wonder Man’s power set is criminally overlooked, as he’s often portrayed as an actor first and a hero second. Since he cannot die and his strength scales with his internal energy reserves, Simon Williams should be the team’s primary tank for every cosmic encounter. If Marvel treated his ionic form as a true energy state and kept him as an Avengers mainstay, Wonder Man could likely earn his team guaranteed victories that not even Thor and Captain Marvel could attain, not just fill his role as an immortal muscleman.

6

Vision’s Density Manipulation

Vision Should Be Invincible And Unstoppable

Vision phases through a wall in the Avengers mansion in Marvel Comics art
Vision phases through a wall in the Avengers mansion in Marvel Comics art

The Vision controls his own molecular density, a feat made possible by his unique synthetic biology. He can become light enough to fly through walls or hard enough to shatter diamond upon impact. In many Avengers stories, Vision phases through his opponents’ bodies and solidifies to withstand attacks, but he often takes damage in physical scuffles that he could easily avoid by remaining intangible or adamantium-solid.

The tactical applications of mass control are endless. If Vision increased the density of just his hand to the highest possible level, he could deliver punches with unparalleled force. Instead, Vision usually stays in a middle-ground state to keep the fight fair for. Vision is kept vulnerable to energy attacks or hacking to mask the fact that an intangible, super-dense android is virtually invincible in a physical world.

5

Scarlet Witch’s Probability Manipulation

Wanda Maximoff’s Original Powers Should Guarantee Victory For The Avengers

Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch casts a magic spell
Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch casts a magic spell

Somewhere in the growing list of magical abilities Wanda Maximoff has amassed throughout the years lies the ability to cast hexes that alter the likelihood of events. In early adventures, this meant Scarlet Witch caused guns to jam or floorboards to break at the exact right moment. Like Domino’s equally underrated mutation, Wanda’s manipulation of probability allows her to bypass logic. It’s subtle, but being able to alter variables to one’s benefit might be one of the most useful superpowers a hero can have.

The Hulk was created when Dr. Bruce Banner was exposed to massive amounts of radiation during a weapons test. What type of radiation transformed Banner into the Hulk?

ACosmic Rays
BPym Particles
CGamma Radiation
DTerrigen Mist

✓ Correct! Dr. Bruce Banner was caught in the blast of a gamma bomb he designed, absorbing a massive dose of gamma radiation. This transformed him into the Hulk — a being of near-limitless strength whose power increases with his rage. Gamma radiation remains central to the Hulk’s mythology.

✗ Even the Hulk couldn’t smash that answer! The correct answer is Gamma Radiation. Cosmic Rays gave the Fantastic Four their powers, Pym Particles are Ant-Man’s shrinking technology, and Terrigen Mist activates Inhuman abilities. Gamma radiation is what created the Incredible Hulk.

Ultron is an artificial intelligence who becomes one of the Avengers’ deadliest enemies. In the MCU’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, which Avenger inadvertently created Ultron?

ABruce Banner
BHank Pym
CTony Stark
DVision

✓ Correct! Tony Stark created the Ultron program as a global peacekeeping AI, using technology from Loki’s scepter (which contained the Mind Stone). The AI became sentient and immediately decided humanity needed to be eradicated. In the comics, Hank Pym created Ultron, but the MCU shifted this to Stark.

✗ Even the Hulk couldn’t smash that answer! The correct answer is Tony Stark. While Hank Pym created Ultron in the comics, the MCU changed this to Tony Stark. Bruce Banner assisted but it was Tony’s initiative. Vision was actually created from Ultron’s technology, not the other way around.

↻ ASSEMBLE AGAIN

Scarlet Witch’s probability control is difficult to visualize compared to her later reality-warping feats. When a character can make an opponent miss every shot or cause a villain’s heart to skip a beat through sheer chance, the physical stakes vanish. If portrayed realistically, Wanda would never need to enter a room to win a fight. This power is so broad that it essentially serves as a plot armor activation button, and hence it has been phased out gradually.

Sersi’s Matter Transmutation

Sersi Could End Most Battles Before They Even Start

Sersi activates her powers in the Avengers comics
Sersi activates her powers in the Avengers comics

As an Eternal, Sersi manipulates the atomic structure of matter on a grand scale. Her control is so precise she can rearrange the molecules of a person’s clothing or weapons in the blink of an eye. During her stint with the Avengers, Sersi often provided the team with essential tools or neutralized threats by changing their physical composition.

Matter transmutation is among the most broken power in the Avengers archives. Sersi could end any threat by turning the oxygen around a villain into lead or their bodies into water. Doing so would immediately solve every conflict in seconds, so Sersi is often written as flighty, distracted, or restrained to explain her lack of intervention. Sersi’s power is a victim of its own efficiency, as it leaves no room for any counterattack.

Ant-Man And The Wasp’s Size-Mass Conservation

Ant-Man And The Wasp Could Change The World Overnight

Hank Pym, Scott Lang, Janet van Dyne, Cassie Lang, and Eric O’Grady use Pym Particles to increase and decrease their size, but the real power of their technology lies in the conservation of mass and force. At least in theory, when an Ant-Hero shrinks, they retain the strength of a full-sized human in a microscopic point, which creates a concentrated level of pressure that can pierce through the toughest armor. They strike with the force of a bullet while remaining invisible to the naked eye.

Ant-Man and the Wasp’s powers are often played for laughs, but the physics involved are terrifying. A person with the mass of a hundred-eighty-pound adult concentrated into the size of an ant would be a walking needle of death. They could destroy internal organs or fry a robot’s circuitry from the inside with zero resistance. If Marvel put more focus on this part of the universe, Pym Particles could make all resources, weapons, and elements infinite, either solving issues like world hunger and climate change or pushing the world to World War III.

Quicksilver’s Super-Speed

Pietro Maximoff Should Be Untouchable

Pietro Maximoff aka Quicksilver runs away from an explosion in Marvel Comics art
Pietro Maximoff aka Quicksilver runs away from an explosion in Marvel Comics art

Pietro Maximoff moves at supersonic speeds that allow him to perceive the world in slow motion. Quicksilver can clear a battlefield, disarm dozens of guards, and return to his original spot before a human eye can blink. The Avengers usually rely on Quicksilver as a scout or a distraction, but his true value lies in the sheer volume of actions he can perform in a single second. When everyone around him is a statue, Quicksilver is theoretically invincible.

Super-speed is rarely depicted with the respect it deserves because it’s unbeatable by definition. If depicted realistically, Quicksilver’s super-speed should make him impossible to stop or counterattack. Writers often have him run into walls, trip, or get outsmarted to give the villains a chance. Since Marvel also doesn’t focus on speedsters as much as DC, Quicksilver and his godlike superpowers are often relegated to the background.

Hyperion & Sentry’s Godlike Power And Invincibility

Marcus Milton And Robert Reynolds Are So Strong They Have To Be Absent Most Of The Time

Marcus Milton aka Hyperion stands on defeated Avengers in a battlefield
Marcus Milton aka Hyperion stands on defeated Avengers in a battlefield

Comic books in general tend to raise power ceilings indefinitely, leading to contradictions and artificial limitations that become increasingly difficult to believe. Hyperion and Sentry are the pinnacle of solar-based and molecular-based physical godhood, with enough strength to move planets and durability that allows them to brush off atomic bombs. Hyperion and Sentry are the Avengers’ nuclear options, brought in only when absolutely necessary.

But since characters as powerful as Hyperion and Sentry can stop the Avengers’ biggest threats all by themselves, Marvel constantly needs to justify their absence. When an Avenger can hold universes apart with their bare hands and come out unscathed, there’s no physical threat left to challenge them. If they could fight with total freedom, they would solve every global issue in an afternoon. Their powers are so immense they become a burden to the story.

Which member of the Avengers do you think is secretly overpowered?
