(NewsNation) — Taylor Swift’s attorneys are hitting back after the singer was hit with a trademark lawsuit over the name of her latest album, “The Life of a Showgirl.”
Maren Flagg, a Las Vegas performer, argues in her lawsuit that Swift’s album title could be confused with her cabaret show, “Confessions of a Showgirl,” according to court filings obtained by Variety.
Flagg trademarked the title in 2015 and has used it for a newspaper column, a podcast and live performances. The lawsuit states that both titles “share the same structure, the same dominant phrase, and the same overall commercial impression” and are marketed to similar audiences.

Flagg is seeking a preliminary injunction that would bar Swift from continuing to use the album title.
Swift’s attorneys sharply criticized the filing, writing: “This motion, just like Maren Flagg’s lawsuit, should never have been filed. It is simply Ms. Flagg’s latest attempt to use Taylor Swift’s name and intellectual property to prop up her brand.”
They added that Flagg’s comparison between her cabaret project and Swift’s album is unfounded.
“Plaintiff attempts to broadly lump her cabaret show and defendants’ musical album together as ‘entertainment services.’ That comparison is absurd,” Swift’s attorneys wrote.
The defense also argued that Flagg used Swift’s music from the album in her own social media promotions.
Flagg is seeking injunctive relief, damages, profits and attorneys’ fees. A hearing on the injunction request is scheduled for May 27, while a trial date has not yet been set.
