Today, on the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW), the SPAR brand reaffirms its commitment to reducing food waste across its global operations. IDAFLW 2025 has been identified as an opportunity to emphasise the importance of waste reduction as a critical element of securing a sustainable food future for all.

SPAR internationally has been tackling food waste reduction in diverse ways, across the entire supply chain, for years. Working in close collaboration with all stakeholders, measurable reductions in food loss are being made in both the wholesale and retail operations.

This year on IDAFLW, SPAR highlights its consumer-focused efforts, partnering with platforms like Gander, WhyWaste, and Too Good To Go (TGTG), to make surplus food more accessible and affordable. These collaborations empower shoppers to make sustainable choices while saving money.

Consumer campaign

In 2025, SPAR retailers are collaborating with Too Good To Go by rolling out a campaign highlighting how uniting against food waste brings people together. The initiative also underscores how passionate consumers are about making sustainable choices, especially when purchasing food. This unique campaign uses playful storytelling and customer-facing visuals, encouraging meaningful conversations amongst shoppers. This campaign elevates Surprise Bag awareness and SPAR retailers’ food reduction efforts. Consumers will see the campaign messaging across digital platforms, in stores and through advertising in SPAR store catchment areas.

Practical tools for shoppers

As a grocery retailer, SPAR retail organisations support shoppers with practical tools: recipes using leftovers, food storage tips, cooking advice, and guidance on best-before and use-by dates, all aimed at helping households waste less.

Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goal to halve per capita food waste and reduce supply chain losses, SPAR internationally continues to innovate and collaborate.
