Internet services, including fiber-optic and mobile networks, were cut in Kabul on Monday as the Taliban expanded their restrictions on access to the services, sources told Amu.

The outage brings to 17 the number of provinces where the Taliban have restricted or shut down fiber-optic internet access in recent weeks. Taliban have not publicly explained the reasons for the disruptions.

Taliban began imposing restrictions on fiber-optic services in Balkh province, gradually extending them to other parts of the country. In some provinces, services were later restored at reduced speeds or replaced by limited “point-to-point” connections.

Technology experts say fiber-optic networks provide faster connections and are harder for the Taliban to monitor. They believe the restrictions are aimed at curbing access to information and preventing Afghans from communicating freely with the outside world.
