Comcast has launched a new quantum lab and an initiative to explore how quantum computing can improve network management and delivery. In partnership with D-Wave Quantum Inc. and Classiq, the company is testing how quantum could solve complex challenges that traditional computing systems have difficulty with, particularly in optimizing network performance at a massive scale.

The trials are designed to tackle real-world challenges like traffic management across Comcast’s infrastructure. The company’s quantum efforts are part of a larger initiative called “Project Genesis,” which aims to virtualize the network from core to home. This virtualization is intended to create an environment where the company can explore new quantum capabilities.

Elad Nafshi, Chief Network Officer at Comcast, commented that quantum is introducing an entirely new realm of possibilities for network management and that the company is “excited to dig in and understand the potential for one of the most critical infrastructures of our time.” The partnership with Classiq and D-Wave is positioned as a way to prepare for the future, demonstrating that quantum is becoming a tool for solving real-world problems.
