“I wish Elon luck,” Altman said on the technology podcast “TBPN” released on May 13. He suggested underwater infrastructure may ultimately prove easier to build and cool than computing systems deployed in space.
“I feel like none of the ocean guys are working on ocean robotics are thinking about putting this in at the bottom of the ocean,” Altman said. “It feels easier than constructing space data centers.”

The concept centers on placing compact computing systems in orbit, where companies could potentially avoid land constraints, permitting battles and some power-grid limitations tied to traditional data centers.
Google has explored prototype orbital systems tied to an initiative known as Project Suncatcher, which could involve launching small computing satellites by 2027, the company said in November.
Altman, however, suggested significant engineering and energy challenges remain. “The space is free. The land is free. You don’t run into the regulatory stuff,” he said on “TBPN.” He added that energy generation and infrastructure remain difficult challenges in extreme environments.
