This writer caught up with Maria Carola a few weeks before the 2026 edition of the annual COUTURE Las Vegas show. There, PICCHIOTTI will exhibit new jewelry designs to luxury retail buyers, in addition to new designs from its Xpandable™ collection, which is distinguished by its elegant style and invisible, flexible engineering.

Developed more than a decade ago, the Xpandable™ line of high fashion rings, eternity rings and bracelets embodies proprietary PICCHIOTTI problem-solving technologies. As Maria Carola explained, “Our Xpandable™ rings and bracelets are engineered to help jewelry wearers overcome common challenges of tailoring and comfort.” In fact, she stated, “They are flexible enough to expand so that rings or bracelets will fit when hot weather makes knuckles and wrists swell, or when ring and wrist sizes enlarge with age, or when clasps are difficult to maneuver.”

Confirmation of the Xpandable™ collection’s global impact is PICCHIOTTI’s 20-year U.S. patent on select styles in the range. “Thanks to the invisible flexible mechanisms inside each ring or bracelet,” Maria Carola said, “a PICCHIOTTI Xpandable™ can be enlarged by two, or in some cases by two and a half sizes, depending on the design. We were the first brand,” she asserted, “to create high jewelry pieces that incorporate invisible mechanisms which expand and contract.” As each Xpandable™ design’s kinetic finesse adds inestimable value to a jewel by adapting to the body of the wearer throughout their life, PICCHIOTTI’s engineering feat represents a noteworthy contribution to the narrative of jewelry history.

PICCHIOTTI’s aesthetic and technical advances are logical outgrowths of the brand’s respect for original design, plus a commitment to advancing the functional practicality of high luxury jewelry. “Creativity in design and engineering forms part of our company’s DNA,” Maria Carola said during a Zoom interview. “This philosophy comes from my father, who started working as a jewelry apprentice when he was 13 years old. He worked long and hard to master the goldsmith’s art and his technical knowledge is immense.” As an aspirational young jeweler, Giuseppe also worked on developing cosmopolitan consciousness. “After my father attended a local jewelry school,” Maria Carola explained, “he went to London to study English and attain fluency.” Becoming bi-lingual, she suggested, gave Giuseppe a wider and deeper understanding of the world, plus competitive advantages in international exports and gemstone sourcing. Since the brand’s founding in 1967, he has traversed the globe in search of rare and unusually beautiful gemstones, which he often has recut for various PICCHIOTTI collections, including the Masterpieces high jewelry collection. Giuseppe’s fluent English also helped refine his instinct for anticipating luxury jewelry trends, while enhancing his ability to develop designs that resonate with luxury consumers and retailers.

For example, PICCHIOTTI’s Masterpiece collection, which has been produced since the brand’s debut, is targeted to connoisseurs and high jewelry collectors. These red carpet-worthy pieces include dramatically draping diamond necklaces, icy diamond and ruby bracelets, superb emerald and diamond jewels and celestial sapphire and diamond rings. Along with the Xpandable™ concept, PICCHIOTTI’s Reversible collection forms another high luxury jewelry breakthrough. This collection debuted in 2022, and its ingenious patented technology allows one piece of jewelry to be easily and freely reversed, creating two jewels in one. For example, the wearer can choose between an all-gold or all-diamond jewel in a couple of seconds. As Maria Carola explained, “Deep consideration went into developing these designs to insure their durability and comfort. They can be flipped on the hand or wrist while in transit.” These styles will never flip accidentally, and while transitioning from one design to the other is quite easy, intentional movement with the fingers is required to make the change.

Based in Valenza, Italy, PICCHIOTTI is a heritage, family-owned brand staffed by artisans who have been with the company for several decades.

For those who are curious about how the drop earrings shape shift, it should be noted that only the drop element of the design is reversible. Yet the design on the other side of the drop can create an entirely different look. The diamond-on-ear piece can be matched with a diamond drop below the lobe, or toned down with a gleaming gold drop below the ear.

Colored gemstones and a dozen different ceramic colors are used to create versatile jewelry looks that can be selected to suit one’s outfit or mood. “The Reversible designs,” Maria Carola observed, “offer options for customers who may prefer more low-key styles in daily life, such as classic gold or unfaceted gemstones, yet for evening they want to wear diamonds. Some of the new designs to be presented at the COUTURE show are set with turquoise, coral, lapis, onyx, pink and blue sapphires and emeralds. While many PICCHIOTTI pieces are one-of-a-kind and set with superbly cut diamonds or colored gemstones, the brand offers around 400 designs, which are only put into production after Maria Carola, Umberto, Filippo, and Giuseppe Picchiotti vote unanimously to move ahead. “Sometimes we decide we have to modify a given design to achieve a result that meets our standards,” Maria Carola emphasized. “We are very attentive to the details.”

Giuseppe is instrumental in steering the company’s artisans to achieve greater artistic and technical heights. “He loves going to the atelier,” Maria Carola relates. “Quite a few of our artisans were hired once they got out of school and have been working at PICCHIOTTI for 20 or 30-something years.” Although she’s too modest to mention it, by any objective standard, Giuseppe Picchiotti’s protegés have evolved into some of the world’s most accomplished and intrepid master jewelers. “My father was trained in the Made in Italy artisanal heritage jewelry techniques that stretch back hundreds of years and are still used to create PICCHIOTTI jewels,” Maria Carola said. (A fun fact about Made in Italy artisanal heritage: Italy’s first official goldsmith guild was founded inside Vicenza’s Basilica Palladiana arcade in 1333.)
