Tom Holland wasn’t the first Spider-Man, and he knows he won’t be the last.
The 29-year-old actor had a hand in crafting the plot of the franchise’s latest film, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” his eighth time playing the superhero. “This is the first time in my tenure as Spider-Man that I was kind of welcomed into the writers’ room,” he told Empire, revealing he contributed to an important element of the movie. “My pitch when I came to the table with it was called ‘Spider-Puberty.’ What happens if Peter Parker is losing control and things are changing?”
That initial idea was shot down, but Holland said, “They liked the kernel of the idea and it grew into what we have in the movie now.”
Someday, Holland will cease to be Spider-Man, but he wants to facilitate the next era. “For whoever’s next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter,” he said. “Whatever that looks like, I don’t know. But if I could do what Downey did for me, then I would be so content swinging off into the sunset.”
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is set to release on July 31 and will explore the aftermath of Peter Parker’s decisions in “No Way Home.” In order to protect the multiverse, Peter realizes he must erase himself from everyone’s memory. Now, Peter must try to save the world while his friends have no idea who he is, and while realizing his powers aren’t as strong as he needs.
