Renowned film poster artist Renato Casaro died on September 30, 2025, at age 89. Considered one of the most influential and innovative Italian poster designers, Casaro leaves behind a legacy of hand-painted artwork for thousands of films, including such classics as Conan the Barbarian, Octopussy, and A Fistful of Dollars.

Born in Treviso, Italy, in 1935,  Casaro was one of the last masters of hand-painted film posters, a legendary Italian artist whose unique style graced thousands of international movie campaigns. He launched his career remarkably young, starting at age 18 at Studio Favalli, the central design firm for Rome’s film industry. By age 21, he already had established his own independent art studio.

After a prolific career that saw his work grace cinemas across the globe, Casaro eventually stepped away from the commercial world of movie posters in 1998 due to the studios opting for digital formats. However, his retirement was not to be the end of his artistic output for film.

In a remarkable third act, director Quentin Tarantino, a long-time admirer and self-professed favorite of Casaro’s work, personally brought the artist back into the spotlight. For the promotion of his 2019 film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Tarantino sought to capture the authentic, vintage feel of 1960s/’70s Italian movie promotion.

Tarantino commissioned Casaro to create a series of posters for the fictional Italian Westerns that his character, actor Rick Dalton (played by Leonardo DiCaprio), starred in.
