A letter by 15 clinical directors of NSW public mental health services, sent in late 2023, did not completely surprise Dr Pramudie Gunaratne.

The neuropsychiatrist knew of the problems they were warning about. Services were rapidly losing staff, struggling to recruit and under immense pressure. 

What frightened her was the thought that things could get worse.

“The fact that these very senior psychiatrists who ran services took this step and pleaded with us to do something raised serious alarm bells,” she tells AusDoc.
