The enduring appeal of Sandy Liang’s designs stems from her ability to transform nostalgia into fresh, contemporary and pragmatic fashions. For resort, this ethos continued with influences spanning from “The Parent Trap” to childrenswear and early 2000s outerwear to pageantry, which were then twisted into an assortment of cute sporty-meets-girly dress.
“I love the idea of like the gorp-y, dorky jackets that we all were forced to grow up wearing. That’s kind of the same language of why I started doing fleece [jackets] — like those fleece-lined windbreakers from Old Navy, that yes were hideous but now cool,” Liang said of her signature fluffy fleece jackets before pointing out her new selection of sporty shrunken anorak jackets and heavier parkas in candy-colored hues with girly back-bow motifs.
In Sandy Liang fashion, they were styled over little princess party dresses, like a little black matte and shiny satin dress that recalled one of Meredith Blake’s, or piled over minis with built-in sashes in the way that any New York party-going girl would. Liang said Uggs would likely complete that nostalgic look, but throughout resort, she opted for adorable napa ballet pumps, trimmed in faux fur, which first debuted on her fall runway and will be produced this season.
Alongside new takes on her bestselling satin jacket-and-skirt combos and schoolgirl layers, Liang carried through her ditsy floral-printed jersey layers while adding ample texture through fun new faux fur V-neck sweaters (one in a great “golden retriever” shade) and cozy hoodies, “because we all grew up in the era of Baby Phat,” she said.
