On Gerran Howell and Shabana Azeez’s accent work
Lovett calls attention to Welsh actor Gerran Howell‘s impressive accent work as the American Dr. Dennis Whitaker, but when another member of the panel chimes in to give Australian Shabana Azeez credit for her accent work playing Victoria Javadi, the moderator gives a dismissive response.
“But it’s easier for Australians to do the American accent sometimes,” Lovett asserts, to which Shabana fires back, “And what does that mean?”
Lovett defends himself by saying “a lot of Australians” claim “it’s easier to do an American accent.”
“Who are those people?” Shabana asks with a laugh. Another person jokes they should “cut” the segment to try and diffuse the tension, which scores a big laugh from the room, but then Shabana goes on to explain the reality of her own accent work.
“No, actually, I think it’s really hard because my accent’s right up the back,” Shabana explained, gesturing toward her throat. “And your accent’s right up the front,” she continues, seamlessly transitioning into American. “It’s the opposite, actually.”
