Arthur becomes post-tropical, still expecting impacts in ENC

  • June 18, 2026

As of the 11 PM update, Arthur lost its tropical storm designation and is now a post-tropical cyclone. This continues its path along the Gulf Coast today. The system has sustained winds of around 35 mph and wind gusts of 45 mph, moving northeast at 9 mph.

Arthur formed off the coast of Port O’Connor, Texas, around 11 AM Wednesday. While the tropical characteristics have fallen off, the system is still ripe with moisture and will bring heavy rain and strong to severe storms to Eastern NC late Thursday into Friday.

The track and forward movement speed of the remnant low has lead to an adjustment to our anticipated impacts. We are now expecting the severe storm window to open after 9 a.m. and close around 3 p.m. A few severe thunderstorms are still expected, but this will likely be more of a heavy rain event, something we’ve been in need of for months. Rainfall will likely reach between an inch to two inches from Thursday night to Friday night. Some areas could experience more than that depending on the track of thunderstorms.

Tropical systems can increase the amount of wind shear and instability present in the atmosphere. With the low moving directly over Eastern NC, we can’t completely rule out a tornado simply due to the presence of spin-inducing wind shear.

We should always hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. Now is the time to make sure you have your hurricane plans in place should a storm potentially threaten Eastern NC for the upcoming season.
